London-based producer, composer and musician Gaudi has remixed Maria Matveeva’s single “Kalinushka”, which she made in collaboration with well-known French Grammy-award-winning composer and producer Eric Mouquet aka Deep Forest. During his decade-spanning career, Gaudi has released more than 16 albums, 250 productions and 90 remixes and has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including The Orb, Bob Marley, Scissor Sisters, and Simple Minds. His eclectic use of cross-genre production has gained him considerable recognition throughout the world as he brings together fans of electronica, dub and reggae. Gaudi has been featured in major publications the world over including Pop Matters, Clash Music, Louder Sound, Louder Than War to name a few and received airplay from the likes of BBC Music 6‘s Don Letts. The remix will land on the 13th December ahead of the release of Matveeva & Deep Forest‘s EP, “Siberian Trilogy Project”, due on the 21st December.

“Kalinushka” is the third single taken from Maria Matveeva and Deep Forest’s upcoming collaborative three-track EP titled“Siberian Trilogy Project” set for release on the 21st December. In addition to her career as a lyric soprano in the Opera, Matveeva has experimented various musical genres. She is always on top of her game – and in the past she has collaborated with notable musicians such as David Bowie’s pianist, Mike Garson, notable for working with the likes of Nine Inch NailsThe Smashing PumpkinsAlessandro Alessandroni Jr and Alex Elena, just to name a few. Matveeva’s latest delivery, “Siberian Trilogy Project” is an experiment with an innovative musical idea, which fused different styles: lyric voice, electronic sounds and the ethnic elements.

Since 1992, Deep Forest have been dubbed as pioneers of ethnic electronica”, mixing ethnic with electronic sounds and dance beats or chillout beats. Nominated for a Grammy Award in 1994 for Best World Music Album  and winning the award in 1995 for their album BohemeDeep Forest also became a World Music Awards Winner – receiving an accolade for the French group with the highest 1995 world sales. Their albums have sold over 10 million copies to date, and have since toured the world extensively. Deep Forest have also contributed music to the 1995 film Strange Days featuring Peter Gabriel. Since then, Deep Forest have still been going strong, collaborating with dozens of similarly like-minded artists and working closely with label giants Sony and Epic, respectively.

Maria Matveeva’s palette of influences come from artists such as current collaborators Deep ForestMichael Cretu (Enigma),Mike Oldfield and Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), although her experimental twists and turns, and sonic vocal delivery could compare her best to artists such as Olafur ArnaldsEnigmaThe Knife and ANOHNI for her theatrics in vocal technique and dramatic stage presence.

“Kalinushka” was inspired by an old cantilena or traditional lullabye that Maria’s great-grandmother used to sing to her. The piece holds great folkloric and hereditary importance, based on the single verse handed down through Maria’s family tree, to all the generations of women. The tune reflects the pre-revolutionary charm of traditional Russia and recounts the bitter fate suffered by the women of the era, who experienced an overwhelming lack of freedom, not even able to choose their own husbands. However, Maria takes the cantilena and makes it her own, adding new lyrics to the song; Maria’s version tells of the strength of women overcoming their difficulties, becoming masters of their own destinies.

Gaudi brings an infectious dance-floor rhythm to Maria Matveeva and Deep Forest’s “Kalinushka”, upping the groove factor with deep bass wobbles and crisp beats. The remix could fill any dancefloor across the globe, yet still retains the mythic beauty of the original track, with Maria’s traditional layered vocals bursting through the electronic drums with confidence and grace.
