The second release from Bogota and Berlin based Big In Japan (a label set up by former Ninja Tune employees Seb Jenkins and Liam Nolan ) comes from Daniel Broderick aka Dani Boom . Dani Boom is a pioneer of the electronic music scene in Colombia; from raves to clubs to festival stages, for the last 20 years he has pushed the electronic music scene forwards in Colombia and beyond.
Dani was an architect of the 90’s Bogota rave scene although he is more widely known as co-founder, producer and DJ for Colombia’s most explosive live act, Systema Solar . Meshing Afro-Caribbean sounds with cumbia, hip-hop, house, techno and breakbeat, Systema Solar re-invented the way Colombian sounds are heard and garnered support from tastemakers like Gilles Peterson and Lefto .
Dani Boom played the first Colombian Boiler Room , various Red Bull Music Academy events in Bogota and has worked in the studio with Dengue Dengue Dengue as part of RBMA’s ‘Re-discovering City Sounds’ project. He was voted no. 4 in Thump Colombia’s top 20 DJ list 2016 and got a special mention in their top producers list for his new project El Leopardo which made its live debut at Sónar Bogota in December 2016…but more on that later! Despite influencing the music scene in Colombia and beyond for 20 years, Dani Boom has not officially released any solo material as Dani Boom …that is until now.
‘Champeta La Voladora‘ translates as Flying with Champeta. Champeta is a genre of music from the Colombian Caribbean coast originating from inhabitants of African descent.
Dani takes a traditional champeta bass and morphs it into a house bass line and layers it with champeta style guitars he recorded specifically for the track. The result is a bouncy Afro-Colombian house track that transports you to the Caribbean coast. One very early version of the track exists on vinyl thanks to Dani making a trip to Quantic ’s house in Bogota where Will Holland offered to cut him a dub plate. The second track is a rework of a traditional Colombian vallenato song called Los Sabanales by Los Corraleros De Majagual . Giving it a heavy squelchy bass, Dani transforms this Colombian classic into a dance floor stomper.
Having played it out and been begged for the track to be released by DJs & punters alike, we are really pleased to finally give this an official release. To coincide with the EP launch, Dani Boom will be on tour in September and playing various dates in DF (Mexico), Bogota and Cali (Colombia), Paris (France) including Techno Parade and more TBA.
Release Date: September 22st, 2017.
