With a BBC Radio 1 show, her own party brand and a record label, Monki presides over a mini-empire. In the seven years since she first got involved in the electronic music business, she has risen to every challenge with aplomb, working her way up from an intern at Rinse FM to become an influential international selector, with gigs across Britain and beyond. Monki has appeared at many of the UK’s most iconic venues as well as commanding the big stage at festivals on a regular basis. A consistent force within the electronic music scene, Monki operates in a class of her own.
Earlier this month she released her debut release ‘Voices’ on her Andfriends label. For the special occasion she has shared some of the bangers she’ll play regularly this summer.
1. Krystal Klear – Shockzoid
“I’ve been listening to this EP a lot. Obviously the lead record Neutron Dance is a wicked tune but don’t dismiss the others, this is taken from the same EP and is wicked.”
2. Basement Jaxx – Good Luck (Butch Remix)
“Huge remix, delivered on my Radio 1 show as a Monday Club Caller and been going on every time.”
3. Giorgio Moroder – The Chase (David Mayer Remix)
“Took a bit of inspiration from this guy for my EP and there’s recently been a remix package of his tunes released, tested this one out a few times.”
4. Monki – Love Magic
“I was listening to a lot of Louie Vega and 90’s house music when I made this, taken from my debut EP.”
5. Mella Dee – Donny’s Groove
“A good pal of mine is doing bits and all on his own label as well. This is his latest release, absolute stomper.”
6. Monki – Voices
“Lead track from my EP, big up on all the support, can’t wait to play it out during summer!”
7. DJ Koze – Pick Up
“This whole album is amazing. Something you can listen to on a sunday or play at club or festival. ‘Pick Up’ may well be tune of the summer already.”
8. PBR Streetgang ft Ron Basejam – Montu
“I’m a big fan of these guys. The throwback piano in this record got my attention straight away, I’ve been playing it on the show a bunch.”
9. Mount Kimbie – Four Years and One Day (Gerd Janson Remix)
“Always get excited to listen to a new Gerd record or remix because you know it’s going to be quality, no difference with this one.”
10. Marcus Marr – Rocket Ship (Prosumer Remix)
“Tested this one out at Sub Club the other week and it had a great groove too it, quite simple but effective with an infectious vocal.”
